Simple French Toast

This is what my mother got today for her Mother’s Day breakfast in bed, accompanied by sausages, cherry tomatoes, orange juice, coffee, fresh cut daffodils and lots of presents. I tried my best and I’m pretty sure she loved it. I have never made french toast before, I know shocker. My mom loves it and hasn’t had it in ages so when she requested it, I was happy to oblige. It was so easy and the aromas that filled the kitchen were mouthwatering. I made a savory version but you could easily replace the salt and pepper with a teaspoon of sugar and a drop of vanilla. You can make loads of different versions of this, I won’t even start to list them because I could go on and on. Basically this is a recipe that is as easy as it gets and tastes magnificent, what’s not to love?

Simple French Toast (Serves 1)

2 slices of thick cut bread, such as sourdough or I used an english muffin

1 egg

a drop of milk

salt and pepper

a knob of butter

  • In a wide shallow bowl, beat together the egg, milk and season with salt and pepper.
  • Heat the butter in a frying pan until bubbling. Meanwhile, soak both sides of the bread slices in the egg mixture and place in the hot pan.
  • Cook on both sides until golden to your liking.
  • Serve hot with an extra cheeky knob of butter on top!
